"So, you are talking about an undiscovered backdoor that existed from day one rather than an extension adding one?"

"Yes."

A backdoor from inception whose lock is controlled by a member mechanism? As is so often true, the key enabling question is 'who decides?'. And for what period, if any, invisible?
