It could be an advanced form of tuning component in a cosmic receiver. Perhaps designed by a superior intelligence. Sent in a way that could be based on a time-based communication structure like our own.
"So far, it is a faint pattern. We are assuming our receive apparatus needs improvement and, as well, its connection to us."
Like a scent to a dog, guidance will likely soon occur. Time is not necessarily wasted by reasonably informed speculation. In fact, predictive value gets better with practice. "Nearby now going forward."
