Deep Rapport

"One of the big lessons of this late in the game surge is the discovery of non-verbal communications with a truly authentic sentient being."

"So much is lost when a force for survival is corrupted. How else would one describe the use of spoken language in the age of mechanized manipulation?"

To the notoriously authentic, the sound is what counts most. Not so much the intended meaning. If it is not the truth from the speaker's point of view, the verbal content is essentially moot, is it not?

"Successful interactive communication requires authenticity to some level. At least that is what our investigation so far would have us believe. Let's take a look at why."

Governance

Authentic
"Governance is as effective as the powerful choose to make it.

"For purposes of this discussion, I would like to present several scenarios for your consideration. In all cases, it is assumed that the organization is built-to-last and grow in a sustainable way."

As the style of this group would have you expect, the discussion kept key variables generalized for as long as possible in order to discover the model's re-usable aspects.

Most important among them, the type of organization governed. Though the meeting continued for some time, it was applicable to corporations, governments, NGOs, communities and a plethora of other human endeavors.

The governing performance was highly correlated with authenticity, accountability, efficient resource allocation and utilization especially of the human kind, appropriate constraints on external influences and so on.

Rapid Cycling

"In the morning the sun will shine (yes, the 'real' thing too, of course)."

"Insights create their own dawn, I have discovered. So, if one arrives before they open for breakfast, stoke the embers."

Almost October. Unseasonably warm. Temperature inversion trapping the air pollution? Viewed as a popular disease, high velocity turnover is a curious variation on the human condition. At times, it looks as though all the secure jobs are in the maintenance of suffering.

"Maybe I am angry because I don't want to believe that all I am is what I have been given. There have been times when the irritation subsides. Something I make, however small, tells me I am. Feels good.

"You can imagine my gratitude when I discovered that I was not alone. A common quest - to be somebody. Who would have you believe otherwise? A troubled soul, I suspect."

My Show or Me?

"Humiliating for such a smart but inexperienced person to admit to errors that initially were so successful in changing others behavior?"

"Yes, I suspect so. Resolution will be a long time coming if the unity of self-reference is deferred. '... to thine own self be true.' as it were.

"Who I am depends ..."

"Really?"

Persona - in the Jungian sense: the personality mask or facade presented to the outside world. If just a subset of the authentic self and identified as such, relatively benign. Intended to deceive? Maybe not so much.

Acuity

"For purposes of this discussion, ideal is virtually perfect authenticity. Imagine a point at the center of a sphere. Of the dimensions defining the sphere, the point at which all show no bias in either direction along each dimension is the authentic description of the sphere.

"The visualization is intended to show that to be real, requires little 'volume'. The sphere assumes three dimensions but there could be more. Time for instance.

"If one must deal with uncertain and/or unauthentic bias along one or more dimensions, a much larger volume is usually required. You are more likely to find what you are looking for if the 'volume' containing the destination is small."

"Like the fovea of the human retina."

"Or the middle path."

Protaganist?

intel/politics
He knew this would be a shock to her but likely not totally unexpected. Much of the discovery, so far, they had shared without being consciously aware ...

"Yes, that is what I am saying. Look, you may not understand much, if any of it, at this point. However, I can tell you point blank - the story is as clear as this morning's sunrise. Your role in it is to be determined. Your reaction to the testing qualifies you more than any other player we have considered to guide the angles by which the audience will view it."

His affirmation that the ideal character to lead the story may not be ready to do so established two crucial elements unique to it. One, that though fictionalized, the story tracked related facts to an extraordinary degree. Two, the story could be but was not necessarily complete.

Game Design Continued

Not really. Its just ones and zero's.
"A unique secret code associated with and chosen by each game participant for her/himself. The object of the game is to protect the code's secrecy (white list players) or surreptitiously decode it (black list players).

When joining the massively online game, an individual also chooses to 'identify' with the white list or the black list or somewhere along the spectrum spanning the two."

"But the spectrum of which you speak has more than one dimension?"

"Most assuredly. Like two poles of all dimensions, the center void and its complement."

"I propose a working title then. It is as follows 'Identity Cyberwar, Us versus Not-Us."

Hearing the Quiet

Prime Directive - Transcend
"A meme can echo for a very long time. When picked up on the instruments of compassion, it can make for a really good lyric. I am pretty sure."

To the untrained 'eye', reliable prescience of the type discussed seems very mysterious. On close examination there are vaguely familiar patterns. Studying such, a big part of the work at hand.

Before the information is committed in final draft form, it exists in a raw but pristine state as if floating in a cloud that, thanks to modern connectivity, can be accessed by ordinary people who chose to be productively curious.

"In a dream I walked alone." Or so it seemed Paul, or so it seemed.

Communique

Messaging of the standalone type.
"... defend these united states from threats both external and internal. The transnational combination of the two seems priority one. I could be wrong.

"Bibi Unleashed."

Not much doubt. The audacity of manipulators is highly visible as a run-up to a national election affecting the planet progresses. No matter the reason, so many seeing the motives is changing both the direction and the effectiveness of such efforts.

Clever event driven timing and sequencing of disclosures is made possible with machine assisted massive online conversations. Advantage - Authentic.

"Less to remember applies here too.  Keeping multiple deceptions  from conflicting is possible only when you have nearly total one-to-many control of communication. That circumstance left the barn some time ago."

Connotation

"Truth is what you can get other people to believe it is?"

"Perhaps that is not the most elegant way to say it. Those words are best spoken behind closed doors. Perception is a proven tool for the deserving when applied to those who need to be led."

The incredulous look on their faces said it all, how is it that so many rationalized manipulations can be expressed in just two sentences?

Classic 'messaging' in the advertising sense can be put to use in just this way. The weakness just described has created a small but rapidly-growing market for a new paradigm, authentic conversation.

One could reasonably argue, the model for profits based on inclusive authenticity has already been demonstrated. The idea that profits are in lieu of compassion or vice-versa has been debunked in some sense by the enormous business success of companies directly appealing to individual's interests over the those of organizations.

"A Cook, Zuck, Page thing?"

"Shh. The disruptors are watching.", she whispered jokingly.

Compassion, Dirty Word Not

"What can I say? I like to keep the titles short."

"Can we call it a working title then?"

This little dance often attended these meetings. Wary of the organized pushback, some were overly cautious of being labeled headline propagandists.

"Recall that it was not long ago that a long difficult investigation revealed just how vulnerable a local government has become to the hazards that attend a severe economic downturn. Are we witnessing a similar situation in a next door county?"

Too early to tell. But probable cause to look further. There is an intense public interest now in just why we have fallen so far in the last decade. Though a bit complex, people with unwanted time on their hands wondering why and how we may re-take appropriate control of our destiny.

"Did I hear right, a judicial function has been outsourced to private attorneys accountable only to a professional association?"

"That can't be right. Check into it."

Betrayal

"She preferred innuendo and academic entitlement to heartfelt and respectful public disclosure. Little secrets and 'innocent' deception justified for the greater good?

"Of course, there is much more to the story. We should be open to a compelling argument that those elements would substantially change the trajectory of its net effect."

Afflictive emotion seething for many decades can have a profound effect on an individuating sentient being who happens to be female. Both of the same gender but generations apart.

Hearing this in his soup he commented silently, "I cannot change my past culpability. Further, no useful purpose is served by wallowing in regret and self-loathing for something that has already occurred. But today, I can choose to lay down my life, if necessary, to see first I change, so that others thrive. Then, with such effort appropriately open to those who seek 'better', light another path. Some call it redemption, others grace ... happiness manifest works for me.

Eureka

It found me.
"I have scaled these city walls ... only to be with you."

'Dreamer'. He heard it as a derogatory term for many decades. Feeling he had no-one else, nothing else to sustain him, he had turned to a highly plausible imaginary world fueled by a creative renaissance undervalued in many circles to this day.

To devalue the food of one abandoned is especially heartless? Key players argued, 'he is the problem child' and found it easier to select a natural scapegoat than to face the darkness. A cry baby, so sensitive as to shiver in terror at the cruel games common to childhood.

Spiritual insight from some quarters would call it grace. From yet others, human's natural state. From growing 'scientific' evidence, a fact of evolution that is highly difficult to rationally dispute.

"Dreamer? I wear that label with pride now. Sweet dreams they indeed are. Like a four-legged critter orates in a language native to a 'land' of compassion, dreams are the stuff of earned true happiness and a courage the envy of any warrior that has ever lived. I am pretty sure."

My gratitude in awkward collections of words, hopefully, will not deter those awakening. I could be wrong.

Cyber Untouchables

"… become legendary for being fearless and incorruptible, in the process earning the nickname 'Cyber Untouchables.'"

"Sounds romantic and a bit unrealistic. What would motivate folks in these times to qualify?"

"The same thing that motivates a community organizer with big ears and a heart of gold."

"This is about Authenticity, isn't it?"

"You think?"

A transition from seeking security through accumulation of property to achieving it by developing a rapport with trustworthy sentient beings is the center we seek.

The remarkable journey continues, Steve.
Ever wonder why plutocrats are obsessed with advancing life extension through medicine no matter the cost? Power, they discover, cannot buy immortality. Build pyramids if you must, but know that subtle wisdom suggests that would lead you away from what you seek rather than toward it.

So, once again dear reader, a salute to the 'crazy ones'.

Beyond the Pale Corruption?

Going down.
"Just how much corruption is acceptable do you suppose?"

High tolerance for same is seldom correlated with efficiency. From one perspective, such a condition can be considered an opportunity. For that, we came.

"We shoot from the hip because it is entertaining.", as he said it, a twinge of fear of his horns showing emerged.

Authentic is the prize. To keep our eyes on it seems wise. For we have moved far from that ideal by overvaluing perception. The theory is that moving toward a interdependent system recognizing that reduction, even elimination, of deception will result in better outcomes than we are currently experiencing.

Brown Eyed Girl

"Heart strings pullled. What did you expect? Sister Luna knows. Don't ask me how. I could ask her but I am still learning Luna-ease. You will be the first to hear once I reach critical mass. Fortunately, she is patient. Hoping you will be too.

"Stay tuned."

License to Practice

Medical
"It is NOT a license to steal. Nor is liberty. I am pretty sure that applies to ownership as well. A nation built to last is about its people, not just its 'owned' property or a privileged subset of its population."

"Professional associations have something in common with labor unions. What are some differences that matter in the current state of our representative democracy?"

One expects a vigorous defense of the for-profit medical model. When should a conflict-of-interest be investigated in this context? Should there be such a conflict, what remedy might be available?

"Maybe we should pick on the lawyers instead? Most of them are toast anyway.", her tone was humorous. Not everyone was laughing.

Maybe Like This

"Start with nothing more than what you would share with trusted friends on your favorite network. As confidence builds that your appropriate privacy is protected and the disclosure mechanisms are sufficiently trustworthy, you and your fellow players put more of who they really are in the system repository. Networks effects do their magic.

"Just as there are rewards for a player sharing deeper authentic items about themselves, there are penalties for attempts to game the system by deception.

"Because Authenticity is a game involving actual personal assets, the expected outcome is a sense of responsibility to the integrity of the game on behalf of all players as well as taking seriously the intrinsic value of oneself. And as the the game grows, the players share EQUALLY its benefits (cash too, Prudence).

The hazard of working in one's mind has been referred to as 'La La Land'. A legendary creative, Woody Allen knows. He has created a film a a year since 1966, almost. If fortunate enough to live to 77 and still be truly alive ...

"But that is life!", she exclaimed barely hiding her exasperation with the utter simplicity of the concept and all the attention it was getting.

"Cool, you might say.", he teased like a loving brother.

Best Game to Happen

Trust - Depth and Direction
"Authenticity, the massively online game where individuals are charged with cooperating to build the best access and disclosure system the world has ever seen. What they risk is knowledge of who they truly are (rather than personas). What they win is the benefits of invention coupled with the protection from those who exploit creativity without contributing to it. The sky is _below_ the limit."

"The 'role' you play is your authentic self?"

"Yes."

"Incentives to build bulletproof systems and stress test them are a key design criterion. In other words, hackers welcome too. Because self-selected personal data is put at risk the game is as close to real as we can currently imagine making it."

Mash up of, say, the big three, one suspects. Facebook on the 5, Apple. iCloud the glue, repository of authentic personal identities, FB or Google+. Or not.

All Sizes And Shapes

"She's a girl and she has a beard."

"I see."

The rest were initially confused by what had transpired.

Gradually they realized, it was another exercise. Without speaking a word out loud, eye contact was sought with the intent of developing an implicit consensus.

After just enough time had passed their collective gaze aimed forward. The spokesperson, just silently selected, stated simply, "Luna. She is Luna.". There was not a whisper of doubt in her voice.

Secret Police

Entertainment
"They looked to be out in force, this afternoon. A show that could be interpreted as implicit intimidation. Not at all unlike the internet presence we have been discussing."

"Fear tactics are more effective in a broadcast paradigm. In sustained, productive conversation the dynamic changes dramatically. Add to the mix network effects, even more so."

Testing early to discover the level to which one's adversary relies on the appearance of sanctioned authority to project power is highly useful. When checks and balances exist but are hidden, the need to reveal them at the beginning is of paramount concern.

Nefarious conflation of a violent international asymmetric threat with the desire to suppress one's domestic political opponents is a pattern easily detected, more difficult to expose. One wonders, why?

© 2012 Buzz Hill

Existential Threat

"According to this line of thought, the largest threat to US interests could be interpreted as internal?"

"I am not sure I would use those words. The US is most vulnerable to manipulation of its existing institutions, public and private. Most of who we are talking about have substantial operations within US borders, so-to-speak."

It is a classic instance of malignancy. Whether the seeds of Rome's decline or cancer, a variation on DNA. Think about it.

Now, give this some thought. War has been thought of as the option of last resort. Destroy, annihilate, obliterate the enemy. Whether it is uncontrolled growth of cells or something that destroys life at the groups of organisms level, extreme threats provoke extreme responses. Combat is the order of the day.

But we 'know' there is another option. Its kind of built-in. The species would not have survived if this were not so. Lady bugs aren't extreme, just effective. Still guessing?

"Just because it is not patentable doesn't mean it is not useful. Just more difficult to fund when selfish dominates."

One and Only One

"You see, the software company that designs hardware devices in California has what could become THE KEY. They will have competition but will maintain the pole position because of the culture built to support their high integrity products. More about that later.

"Soon, tightly integrated software and hardware will empower authentic individuals to protect and enable each other like never before, on a global scale. Think, 'intrinsic value of an authentic individual.'

"You may have gathered by now. A few, very powerful individuals want to stop this trend from growing or at least slow it down enough to adapt."

Inside Job

Cars and Hacking
"Identity theft by insiders is a completely different problem than outsider theft. Usually more complex and harder to prevent, also. Hackerville, VPN's ... the usual suspects.

"Who has an interest in catching the folks who might be internationally deployed for small transactions the value of which is disruption rather than cash directly from the victim?"

"Can you say, 'conspiracy theory'", she did not really contain her grin completely. Some of the others started to giggle.

"The other side does it!" laughing more pronounced.

"Mistakes were made." That did it, there was not a serious face left. The real fools may just be the ones who pushed 'they are stupid' way too far.

The comments served to punctuate the pattern, obfuscation vs. insightful humor (asymmetrical contest). Pundits opined after the first sentence, as is there want. They know how important quick expected opinions or their extreme opposite are to survival. To much supply not enough demand.

Dark Side of Brand

Mom AND Apple Pie
"A great theme co-opted by an owned media-entity, WSJ (brand herein referenced). Look a little deeper for the advertising you did not know you payed for.

"No question it has been a clever component of the plutocracy opposition's agenda. In this case, science for profit. It is behind the pay wall. Harvesting the perception that paying for it means it must be more valuable (not always the case). Paying to read PR releases is like paying for the earth to rotate.

"When brands are sold to the highest bidder, a vulnerability of the human architecture is exploited for the benefit of a few. Some argue the brain part of mind is an abstraction engine. Further it is prone to destructive errors. Minds acting in concert mitigates."

"Yeah, basically."

Hi Risk

"So, there I was. New to this extended therapeutic routine. Unlike the pain of most major procedures, it was an entirely different experience. Mystically pleasant. Front and center shared the awareness that I would not be in this situation if the prognosis was very promising."

"The quack hunters were just outside banging on the door with blunt instruments of fear and anger. All deputized on the spot just a short time before. A flood of sympathy for the plight of gypsies pored over me.

"Through it all, she seemed to not even blink. My trust had NOT been mandated. No, no. It was offered in sweet surrender."

"We will not spend the time to describe the virtual magic here. Soon enough though. Stay tuned.

"They had kicked down the door and she was missing. A sacrifice she did gladly make in defense of another. But I could not let it stand. No, it should be me laying down my life in support of that most genuine of hearts. And in a quest to save her, I got up again and took a solemn oath to find her.

Deception Relief

"The congestion is clearing up. My sense of taste is returning. Non-authentic seems offline at the moment. As the song says, 'no static at all.'

"You might think of it as the integrity piece. The result is generally perceived as beautiful and like the word, defies tight description.

"The big three know this. Because they are privately successful AND 'tuned in'. Google, for example, under a leadership succession that was thought through, knows that value rather than valuation is the key to building something that lasts.

"Genuine, the real deal - if you know what I mean. If folks get to see those who are truly authentic, as well as hear the words delivered with integrity, good things happen."

Dog Napping

"Sorkin may have missed it altogether?"

"Or his sources. Just a theory supported by the observations of a few, I suspect. Two threads - plausible and … what was that other one?", he paused rubbing his chin wondering what had interrupted his impromptu thought.

The silence that ensued cued introspection. The other thread, 'expected'.

"Social is not a dirty word. Who would want others to believe it is so? And why? Ambiance, as if someone was experimenting with 'gas light'" on a grand scale. The motive may well be the same, money/power. Or just protecting ill-gotten spoils."

This team was, by now, very familiar with the roll of manufactured perception in modern society. A highly powerful tool, particularly destructive in the wrong hands. Zoomed out, the seeds of this malignancy became surprisingly visible.

Identity Calculus

How does she see it?
K = IV( API )

He scribbled down the formula on his soup's white board knowing that as his mind 'woke' up to the days sensory input he would need a hook.

"See if this sounds like what you are suggesting. The intrinsic value is a function of one authentic personal identity. There is a one, and only one, relationship of a qualified person to their corresponding API."

"We have yet to explore the effect of the passage of time, the special dimension of the continuum as it relates to this context", she offered. Vintage stuff in this group. If anything deserved such a designation after just three years.

In that moment, he could see Luna's wink of a few days back. How is it that four-legged sentient being could understand so much? "Helping with the laundry, or something. Pictures could fill in the detail. Maybe that will happen soon. Is authentic the absence of deception? I will ask her in her native language in our next session.

Is That Possible?

North of the Bernard (Beaverton) Airport
"Learning so much, so fast. I want to help as soon as I am able. Even if I have to do it from the other side."

It was reminiscent of the wisdom he would hear from his father. The great ones are those who hang in there - between the time when extraordinary taste is present and the ability to meet one's own standard occurs. Creativity, expectation and disappointment go together. Get over that before getting rid of it.

"This circumstance has an amazing silver lining. 'First you get nervous, then you swing the club.' a prescription for satisfaction on the golf course. But I digress. Silence is conducive to listening. A dog hears really well, WHEN IN IS NOT BARKING."
