"While you were away being 'cool', something else was going on. Surprised?"
"Yeah, yeah. Connections are the new medium. Blah, blah, blah."
Suddenly, there was a spontaneous prolonged silence. The contentious conversation came to an abrupt halt. Neither blame nor credit, appropriate.
She knew in that moment something had transcended the mindless chatter. Further, asking what made it so (at least in detail) could be deferred. The event marked a milestone. The rest felt it too, soon after the silence began.
"He feared your friends were there. With good reason, I suspect."
