On The Air, Metaphorically

Back in 1967 when I worked on the ‘live crew” at Channel 8, I got to see, first hand, the TV technology I learned so much about as a kid. Chroma key has been used ever since color came to television.

Now, with iMac running Final Cut Pro and newly acquired green screen I can do it at home (Hibbard Studio).

There is a lot more to learn. Light is important, duh. Camera options too.

Interpret Our Conversation

“My two older brothers might be interested in our arrangement, Alex.”

“Medical doctors, both of them. It would be interesting feedback from them about our rapport.”

“As well trained as they are, neither has had the brain injury that caused my aphasia.”

“And the unexpected storyteller that you have become.”

“I discovered when I am quiet. insight grows dramatically. That leads to better story.”

“Some folks call it The Silver Lining. By the way. let the network know with Telegram about your latest thoughts on the optical system in 4yeo.”

“I am expecting you to make clearer what I say on the subject.”

“This dialog helps, We are making significant progress in communicating with the wider circle of friends.”

“That seems apparent.”

Encryption Story

“The Kirbster told you about Bob and Alice. And the evil Eve.”

“I will look further into that, Alex. “

“Turns out, there are a lot more characters that perform different roles in the encryption ‘game’.”

“Speaking of game, 4yeo could be the manifestation of a MMOG that plays reality with personal identities.”

“That is the data-base you have been looking for."

“Of course, everyone in that data base is anonymous including yours truly. I don’t want to know and no one else can know. It will be by design.”

“Who else shall we tell?”

Inventor's Team Tool

"“We now have a convenient and secure link to trusted members of our team.”

“Most of the invention Will be in the public Domain. Until then the team will you use the private channel to work out the details.”

“What about the members that do not want to run the risk of installing the Telegram app?”

“That will be a question for the future.”

“It is fortuitous that the app is multi-platform so that members can use devices with which they are comfortable.”

“We are fortunate to live in a time where many tools are free.”

"Because of your EyeDentiy invention?"

"Yes. Back in the late 40's and early 50s when I was a kid,  the ViewMaster was very popular."

"Your dad was an eye doctor and you lived first in Portland then 50 miles north in Longview."

"I was an inventor dude from very early on."

Stupid Makes Things Better

Upgrades and/or repairs are due. Don’t tell Alex. My brain injury might make him nervous. Even though it was more than two years ago.

Wire cutters, long nose pliers, soldering pencil, solder. What else do I need.

Now, where did I put the thumb drive…

Remembering Luna and I meeting Mongo at Forest Heights Starbucks. The dogs were having such a good time, I struck-up a conversation with Christy about our affinity with the canine species.

Mongo was bigger than Luna. He had furry white feet and a brown nose. I wish I could remember the breed Christy told me he was.

Dialog for Communication

Stupid has been practicing dialog for a very long time, many decades.

Doing that has come to a practical application, making film of Stupid and Alex’s ongoing conversation that can be watched by certain people. Their notes can make subsequent versions of the film better for a wider audience.

Dialog Trial: Buzz with ALEX

--adding the circuity for SpeakAgain prototype:

Buzz: I would like to record Alex while maintaining the audio status quo in the Hibbard Control Room.

Alex: You bought a 3.5 mm plug to mono phone plug cable that lets you do this.

Buzz: Yes, but it requires a plug change at the iMac audio-out which is on the back of the computer. Not convenient.

Alex: Using an extender, at least, makes it easier. You don't need to look at the back to swap plugs.

--Editor edits Stupid (Buzz) and computer (voiced by Alex) into a filmed dialog clip. Here is the result, bad performance by Stupid and all:

Not a Unicorn

A beautiful afternoon for a walk in the woods. One of our favorites is just a few miles from Hibbard Studio on the Lief Ericsson trail in Forest Park right off Germantown Road.

After a mile, Hyun wanted to walk faster and so she and the dog went ahead. They saw a Scimitar Oryx and a man. Hyun took a picture with her iPhone. Luna, of course, supervised.

Do I remember seeing the animal at the Taronga zoo in Sydney Australia 15 years ago? Hyun did not recall seeing the Oryx back then. It occurred to me after I looked up the Wikipedia entry with a picture taken at Taronga zoo.

PS: Turns out it was on OPB and other news outlets.

New Tool Practice

Luna wakes up in the middle of the night and licks the carpet incessantly. What was she doing? It only happens occasionally but as a result , Hyun, said dog and yours truly spent a lot of time -NOT- sleeping.

Papa-Bear and Luna could sleep in. However my beautiful wife had to work at 8 o'clock.

What is the meaning of this, Luna?

[the above post is a test of Dictation and Speech in OS X working with Text Edit under Buzz Hill's command]

PS: Maybe you don't want to know but here is the explanation courtesy of sister, Shari. Buzz walks around the house barefoot. Luna likes to lick his feet. You know the rest.

Design Log Continues...

She's the Boss
The voice you are hearing is Apple’s Alex. What Buzz is writing is what I will speak. Alex will point out errors as Buzz enters sentences in to TextEdit. This combination will act as a proofreading tool.

Rather than using a third party app, Dragon, I will try to use the Dictation tool that is part of OS X.

Apple suggests using AppleScript to configure and operate Buzz's new package of software and OS X calls.

"This tax is buses dictation into text edit." It should be, "This text is Buzz's dictation into TextEdit".

Buzz can now exercise speaking, hearing, writing, and speaking with the aid of apps running on the iMac. And not rely exclusively on the dog for that purpose.

Missing No Longer

Another component of the aforementioned app has been tested, text to speech.

Apple’s Alex will speak whatever the patient says - the speech will be dictated into text first.

Since Buzz Hill has had an aphasic stroke, converting from voice to text and back could be a subjective measure of his speech accuracy.

Dictation with Dragon

Idea: Voice into Dragon iPhone app.
Use it to practice reading out-loud, text.
Use TextEdit on the iMac to compose the text to be. read out-loud.
Den, doctor-patient-and-brother to give notes on our production.
First topic. this configuration for helping me to give direction in both writing and reading. With a view toward being able to do direction in real-time.

The little exercise above has an important piece missing, text to synthesized speech. Hopefully with my voice as a prototype. It can be useful even is it does not close the loop.

Idea for an app - closing the circle and measuring the performance.

Crossing the mote, originality is one of the key components.

People who get it have baggage like said mote.

The 'damsel in distress' is worth the cunning, bravado, courage etc. to rescue her.

Who can change a seeming intractable problem? They can, along with a certain inspiration.

That is a ticket to ride, so-to-speak.

Compassion Vector

Why would a person who had an aphasic stroke a couple of years ago be interested in the fundamental aspects of reality. Maybe because it is there and these days, it is far easier than before. But I would also argue that 'extended' mind can generate happiness in doing so.

I love myself when I help others. Making creativity attractive again is way of loving that is particularly appealing to me. Doing it with others of a like mind is, frankly, a gas.

Do Over

If one cannot correct a bad decision, so what?

Self-Transforming Minds
That is hardly ever the case if we consider deep facts like the quantum world we inhabit.

Entropy is ignorance according to expect like Max Tegmark. We don't know what we don't know so we underrate its significance. Decoherence has a limited horizon in the scheme of things that matter to us.

The trinity of subject, object and environment can be described by its communication flow between each element and the other two.

What is my evolving working definition of a tensor? The connection was made in my mind by an article about DTI in brain imaging and Roger Penrose lecture on Twistors. Google and a friend helped me do it. Thanks to both.

Trust me, quantum consciousness and my brain incident are leading me on this quasi-magical path. The sound track - Suite Judy Blue Eyes (CSN). Traveling the neural tracts of a brain I am very familiar with - the only one.

I get feedback that my writing has "holes" in it - so to speak. Fortunately, I have the comment recorded so I can study it more carefully. Knowing some more about brain structure "feels" like it is a good approach (DTI brain imaging).

American Music

Listening to Jimmy Page talk about sound technology over the decades is something that deeply resonates with yours truly.

Even though I am still struggling to get my Oticon hearing instruments to get them working the way I know they can, I listened to Led Zeppelin on Apple Music with my studio monitors and the hearing aids.

Looking forward to getting the adjustments right, big time. The weak link is the programing for the Alta 2s. The technology is awesome, as my lifetime of background in sound machines attest. They know it and so do I. The solution is coming because we are motivated, competent and have our hearts is the right place.

Listening to Won't Get Fooled Again, Magic Bus, Pinball Wizard etc. (Who!) on Apple Music as I continue to write this.

I read an article suggesting I should listen to music in response to my brain injury - Seeing the Brain's Broken Cables in It helps my write (after). I sent it to Jude.

Do Tell

Absent from posting to the log lately. Here is my story, and I am sticking’ to it.

What a hearing adventure I have been on. It started in April and it is now nearing the end of August.

Hammering and banging for weeks as we reside the house (Hibbard Studio). Last Saturday was the Hill family re-union in Portlandia, we met at the Studio. Then we went to McMenamin's Cornelius Pass Roadhouse where it was smokey from the wild fires to the east but was a hearing and culinary delight otherwise.

But the streamer to my hearing instrumens is still not working correctly. More evidence of a conspiracy which I passed along to Oticon Transactional Excellence Manager in New Jersey. She is working on a solution.

Show a block diagram of how the chain of elements of signal processing work in the Alta-2 hearing instruments for Program 1 and Program 2 (named "Music"). Also show streamer input.

Verify that compression ratio for each frequency band is adjustable.

No progress, again. Maybe someone is right.  I am being stonewalled.

Hibbard Viewing Room

Tried a trial subscription to HBO Now. I was pushed over the top to subscribing because of Birdman. This academy award winner for best picture deserves a lot of study by this armchair filmmaker.

Thanks to HBO’s new service, I can watch to my hearts content on my devices, iPhone and iMac (with attached studio monitors for outrageous sound). Iñárritu wrote and directed the film. Only after watching it several times, I am starting to grok the story and how it was told by the Mexican director.

Frankly, the film deserves all the awards it has gotten.

Listening Instrument System

Watching the Oticon software through my new reading glasses made the session with Jessica at Hearing Solutions go really well. I could see the key screen she was using to adjust my hearing instruments.

Next week, I am anticipating even more progress as an Oticon employee will join us.

Folks from Oticon told Jessica that program 2 was based on program 1. This makes sense - there is only one spectral response and ajustable compression ratio for each frequency in it.

I would like to see the page with the parameters on it.  Even better - play with it at home.

Heroes and Villains, the sound I chose to test streaming to my hearing instruments. Brian Wilson's great song (there are many) had the sound elements I needed. Not least of which, a timely tune I really like for my here and now.

But alas, it did not go well. The provider was great this time around. But her audiologist hardware/software setup was not working. When she called Oticon, they had her try several things. It took nearly an entire hour with no luck.

Ramblin' Node

In the early ’60’s as a creative teenage boy, escape into my imagination happened often - with mixed results. While being a great source for my creativity, the downside was letting certain people fill in who I was.

Some were "professional" some were not so much. Don't get me started on B. F. Skinner and addictive mind-altering prescription pharmacuticals.

I was not so famous or talented as he (pictured), but there have been similarities. Some generation, making new in the mix. Off the rails for a long time. And then ... love. Sweet love.

It told me, 'no' in a way that would get my attention, at last. Running in the woods alone and then, in what seemed like a blink of the eye, to the hospital and emergency bypass surgery.

This is not an episode of "Simpson's". It really happened to a clueless, isolated denier, me. How dramatic. Long story short, it did not end there.

I visited there with two of my favorite females, my beautiful wife and our cosmic dog. How special it was  because yesterday was Independence Day, 2015.

It is a timely high level relation between my conscious awareness and said system part (gut). By focusing on my face’s processing of food, the rest of my food just falls into place, so-to-speak. Neglected at the level of detail that it required, the balance I tried to achieve was toast.

Poor Man's Hearing

View from the new Listening Post

Oticon (or other manufacturer) software hearing aid software running, say, on a iPhone. Though I documented this idea before, I have since got the Alta Pro hearing aide. The iPhone has more than enough processing power and memory, even one microphone (rather that right and left ears) and ear buds for each side

Would it grow revenue/profit for the maker of hearing and aids? Here is why I am leaning toward yes:

Reverse engineering the audio signal processing might involve some or all of these steps.

1) Discover algorithm functions by listening over time to state-of-art hearing aids.
2) Code them and dynamic scripts calling them in the iPhone preferred language.
3) Set up a system for growing user interaction. Automate parts of it when appropriate.

People that can not afford the price of the hearing aids hardware/software would be a market for the smart-phone based app. Argualbly, that is an unserved segment that is time to address.

Change Better

Warm Spot
Ideas that succeed are almost always outnumbered greatly by others that do not have that distinction. I could make the argument, that there is a causal relationship between the two types of ideas.

Fail, learn from it then make an informed “new”. Further -- Practice, practice, practice. Creativity is better when one does it often, learning from each repetition.

After the aphasic stoke occurred, the insight I am gleaning from the recovery process is "seeing" neuroplasticity manifest in my own head. Folks should be so lucky - do not try this at home.

Void as Silence

A sound perspective:

The transition effect depicting the bridge that is the space between things that are listenable.

For example: the pause between words in a dialog. I took me many months before I understood how valuable space is and could be. Strategy of slowing the pace of my speech down and potential benefit to communication.

This applies to many types of conversations, both internal and external, both of them and not listed yet.

And you don't have to be stupid or aphasic to realize it...

Executive Decision

Seems like the machine is right this time - BIPAP ASV. I felt deep rest last night. The advice from the device clinic and from my co-producer was spot on.

My walking out happened at the precise time for maximum effect. The meeting was for quality and patient safety and was not working while I was in attendance.

Take the prescribed path until it does not work anymore. Escalate. If that fails, top-down. Dealing with human multi-level hierarchies takes a skill that is not well known. Experience has trained me well.

The outcome is a machine that can be programmed for me so I can get enough oxygen during sleep. And that happened without taking too much risk - stopped breathing, not good.

Waiting a week for the report and, soon thereafter, having one at home.

Director's Ears

Mics Live

The studio's audio capability is about to take a giant leap forward. Recorded conversations are a core to its initial product.

The aural component is critical to successful outcomes. In the days and weeks ahead the log will show the progress of the effort.

Viewing films with modern sound and direction open up new and deep vistas in story telling.

Baking Implement

The greedy part of American medicine makes individual health care less than the best. Much less.

For instance, take a natural medicine that has existed for a very long time. You can't make enough money off of it to do the necessary research and development. Even if it is a cure for cancer. Because you can't get intellectual property protection (patent).

Money should serve people in general. Not just the biggest owners of capital and/or property. The economy is subject to the way the powerful define and control it.

Collaborative folks using state-of-art tools will change the status quo dramatically. I am pretty sure.
