Which Home?

"Knob Creek. It's in Kentucky. I wonder when young Abraham first became tall?"

"Education is a good way to get where we would like to go but learning is the goal, for it is what makes things happen. So, don't give up if the education available to you is too expensive, lame or discriminatory. Help is on the way. Learn more about the tool you are using and you will quickly see 'what I am talkin' about'.

"So Dylan talks about a direction home because he was 'born in the wrong place.' And a friend recommends the film, Samsara. As a feeling, something we might want for Us - the direction home."

No Way

"It really is the ultimate game. Ok, maybe not. But really good anyway. Cybersecurity is a joke. Everybody knows it."

"We win and make a boatload of money. That's cool.

Hack?
"By hacking today's online services you run a considerable risk that your life's future direction will not be your own. While many may have the smarts and chutzpah of the type that routinely circumvents firewalls and the like, very few get to pilot their own boat long term."

"Like the famous social networking company, Us has a deep interest in discovering the who and how of thwarting the trust on which its membership depends.

"Home to many, all at Us?"

"When I imagine myself working with others to make sentient life better, it looks something like this." He pointed to a handful of pictures.

The Trouble With 'Social' Ads

"Its an ad. I hate ads. Especially the kind that claim a friend of mine endorsed something she/he did not.

"What's worse, the whole mechanism has been made suspect by exploiters even though legitimate use of it would likely be quite useful."

"So, what shall we do."

"Turn it off, outlaw technology?"

"Actually I think there is a better alternative. We have been working on it for awhile. Here is what we have so far. Take a look and tell us what you think."

Automation Analog

"After reading Jeff Hawkins, On Intelligence a few years back, I decided to follow what he has been doing in the field of what I call 'cognitive bio-mimicry'.

Numenta's Grok software is the latest. I find it particularly of interest in the study of genomics. In fact, I suspect there will be considerable cross fertilization between the fields."

It seems as though machine cognition has emerged without a direct explicit effort to make it happen. Generic pattern recognition 'copied' because the capability is so useful may have led the way.

With identity-centric big data we may well see an acceleration in machine-born lifelike 'thinking'. The very high level of abstraction almost guarantees it.

Most Valuable Employees

"The PHP language and monolithic nature of this most successful of 'identity' internet applications intrigues me most as a way to approach our mission."

"Yes, it is where 'the rubber meets the road'. The most important atom is each individual within Us. On the server side those two attributes seem to be critical. "

"Aren't we different in that we provide software that runs on the node hardware (personal device)?"

"Good point.

Medical Error

"We must tolerate them because it is our medical culture. We need to educate our patient population that it is the price we pay for the best health-care in the world."

Its the same old song. The Four Tops got it right.

  But with a different meaning
  Since you been gone

Decades in the making, house calls have turned into ER visits. Patients who know understand why that makes no sense AND discover what they have in common may have an answer soon. We call it Us.

"Yes, patient advocacy demonstrates one application of an identity-based affinity group. Some would argue, one of the best.

"Many feel that the medical consumer is under represented. As a cooperating subset of the population, it need not be so."

What's In A Name?

Reversible Transform?
"Bio-Sphere On one side is analog, on the other side (180 degrees in both surface dimensions) is digital (artificial) identically. One is a (theoretically) reversible transform of the other. One is convenient. Its transformed counterpart, precise."

"Bi-Hemisphere. Less a misnomer? What about overlapping spheres, one centrally located ... Imagination overload imminent." He looked as though he had been holding his breath too long.

"Oh and anonymizing function between the wings of the butterfly."

"How so? I seem to remember, we have talked about this before."

Name This Spectrum

"One could argue that a name and zip code pair would be on one side of a certain spectrum and the genome associated with that single individual is far to the other side."

"Useful poles within a distribution?

"Yes, in the sense that the abstract form is for convenience on, say, the left and precision increases as the distance increases from it to the right where the associated genome lives.

"It is an Us thing."

Monetize what?

Social Network
"I am the business end of this company. It is what I am supposed to do."

"Its to nebulous ... generic. The usual suspects will tell us to go away and focus and come back later. We need to understand what it is, what it can be. If that doesn't come first we give it away. And probably to somebody who will spend way too much money fumbling the ball."

"Us as the group's name is a mixed bag. The lower case version, 'us' is a very common word. It is a pronoun that accurately describes in many important respects what the charter intends.

"Just googling 'Us" shows how easily it might be confused with mismatched or unrelated concepts, though."

This was not the first time that a discussion of start-up sequencing began with a difference of opinion as to what (and by implication, who) should lead. No doubt this will lead to yet more how-to books on how to avoid such squabbles. Right.

Why not?

Nope
"See if this resonates:

"Competition and cynicism have a vested-interest, so-to-speak, in the sustained notion that resistance to "big wins" is futile. Accept that not only will there always be reason to fear powerful rich folks but that you are wasting your time to do anything (like joining Us) to mitigate the situation.

"From their perspective, it is cheaper to sustain your fear and in the process prevent leveling of the playing field than it is to compete creatively with its attendant risk."

"Trust us, we're big. We can protect little guys like you."

A 'Privacy' Trend

"Late to the party … again. Fear, uncertainty and doubt may trip up the leader long enough so the slow launch predatory champion can catch up. Individual representation will not stand. We have ill gotten fortunes to protect!"

Watch the faces in the audience as each sentence plays. The most interesting among the various faces belong to folks who have been relying on stealth for their deception and the deception they have supported. The look is, "I don't know what your talking about." For you older folk, recall the facial expression of one witness on any given Perry Mason television episode.

Privacy is a big deal. Means different things to different people. The word's use is frequently a tool of manipulation based on its ability to induce fear. Boo!

Profiting from the Fear Meme

"Are you sufficiently fearful of what could be?

"The question will likely invoke a lot of billable impressions. Think of the money we would make!"

"It has been easier to make hay that way than our idea, no doubt. But that market is virtually saturated, is it not?

Does this story have a happy ending? Tune in next week for the continuing saga of Us - maybe even sooner.

Friendly Value Exchange

"A student who collaborated with us understood our 'intrinsic value of an individual' premise. She then later found a job with a better match to her personal needs at a larger firm.

'We had asked her if, for any reason, she needed to leave to work elsewhere that she give us permission to share with others the mutually beneficial aspect of the relationship she had with Us."

The larger 'social distances' usually require less granularity of trust but the proximate friends require very little in the way of nuance. The trust relationships frequently evolve over time. In short, some heuristics can be inferred from social history but one cannot assume a detailed default access profile.

The challenge is to discover the path of least resistance that achieves appropriate access for each individual?

Authenticity Shell's Node

The Person: A single individual who is also a member 'in good standing' of idSpere network.

A Device w/ID: Portable technology that The Person carries. It is connected to the world by wireless access to the internet (the cloud). The device, for example is a fully functional smartphone or tablet that simply adds the 'who is using me and what does that mean in the current context' background application.

ID Gate: an single person instance of idSphere driver in the cloud whose function is to provide a transaction/conversation gateway between people and services.

idSpere, the authenticating shell application is built and maintained under the strict (sometimes indirect) control of its members. It is the sole interface to the world wide web when chosen by a member to use certain web functionality.

Hidden Intrinsic Value

"What I am talking about could be described in yet another way.

"We as humans, due to the abstraction machine nature of our minds, tend to take for granted our most useful concepts if they have not yet been realized in our artifacts.

The consequence of gravity is an example. We have become so accustomed to its effects that we are able to deal with it without much thought to the 'mechanism' that causes it.

"Such also is the case with identity. Its sheer complexity made it difficult in the past to separate the causes of its deeper meaning because it had yet to manifest fully in things we created.

"Things have changed. Managing complexity is no longer the exclusive domain of deep biological cognition ..."

Maker, Taker, Schmaker

"Did the term 'maker vs. taker 'originate with a political aspirant rationalizing selfish entitlement of asset hoarders? It would sure be different than making the case for incentivizing (financial and/or otherwise) those who create shared wealth."

Value Investing
So, we have again backed into another example that points out the hazards of co-opted naming - a major theme of this log. Previous references here to the phrase intended to point out the basic difference between plutocrats and compassionate entrepreneurs investing activity. Think: Is the investment to create shared value for which there will be a reward in the form of profit?

If you have 'earned' a better net worth over time and struggle to understand what I am talking about ask someone like Warren Buffet or Eric Schmidt to clarify. I think you will find, there is a big and important difference between the two.

Accidental Liaison?

A very savvy technology business person has just returned from a visit to an isolated hermit kingdom. One that aspires to be a nuclear power.

Officially it was a private visit. Those of us who like to dig deeper are inclined to informed speculation about said trip's meaning on an international strategic political plane.

Consider these facts. Mr. Schmidt is perhaps the most capable corporate executive on the planet. He is an enthusiastic supporter of our re-elected president. Barack's second term success will depend largely on the efficiencies brought to us by the connected age. His first term proved that connectivity (internet) is the defining reality of volitional change in our time. Advantage: Good Guys.

You be the judge. It is not difficult to glean a motive from these facts.

Bounded Liberty

"Most would agree the liberty to steal a neighbor's property is taking the concept of liberty to far. Other examples of exceeding reason abound, of course.

"Just as it is difficult to arrive at a reasonable constraint on liberty's scope, it is also difficult to choose WHO should decide the parameters that define it."

"Shareholders elect directors who are accountable to them. Directors select management to guide the corporations activities in the interest of the shareholders. Directors monitor the management on behalf of their constituents (owners) and take remedial action if and when it is called for.

"In our case, an owner/shareholder is one member in good standing (a single person) who is limited to a single share." No other person or any group (corporate or otherwise) is allowed to own equity or vote on board membership.

Unexpected

"The reaction is not really confusion as I had originally thought might be the case. It seems instead to be anger. The kind that rejects a concept in its entirety without any explanation or elaboration.

"Having said this, I am of a mind that we could benefit by knowing more about why such a response occurred.

"My impression is that one of the main advantages of the US system is the flexibility in designing organizations that best serve a set of goals. This is attractive to a health consumer centric entity that, by charter, is insulated from the economic and moral hazards that plague classic corporations (for example)."

... is Socially Democratic.

At the center of our special social graph is a node. Since there are many nodes, one could say, there is no single center. In fact there are as many 'centers' in our network as there are nodes.

The 'view' from a given node is unique to it. If the node represents one and only one person participating voluntarily in the network, constraining election of representative management of the resulting network can be described as purely democratic (assuming appropriate language exists in  the founding documents)

"Please resist the urge to assume anything more than what has just been described with regard to democracy."

Neo-Network

Investor pundits may still call it 'mobile', but I am suggesting you might look at it in a way that illuminates a big opportunity, not obvious to the usual suspects.

While many things are possible with highly versatile portable and connected devices that travel with their primary user, it all comes together with the network's client node architecture. Further, it is supported with a self correcting global network 'hard wired' to support its only mission, the well being of its iNodes (individually and collectively).

Most of the value added is software/firmware, but that is generally true for many useful new things. Scalable is very often a good thing, and the design is built for that. An elegant primary topology is desirable - check that box too.

"What could possibly go wrong?". Within one second there was a loud thumping noise and the lights went out.

Misunderstood - Rejected.

"I have good news and bad news.

"The bad, folks who might contribute are put off by frequent and obscure indirection.

"The good news, other folks intending mischief and/or competitive advantage tend to give up before they can effectively disrupt or mislead."

Of course, that is more about what what HAS happened. The big part of the story is what is being ENABLED.

The only way our network is meaningful on the desired scale is if the link between social and the perceiver is of sufficient integrity. Enter what has been loosely referred to as 'mobile' for the investor crowd and identity from the tech savvy elder statesman ...

If it is important to Wall Street's perception of Facebook value as recent behavior of the stock would suggest ...

A look through the new Google eyes provides yet another hint.

Big Picture

"So, the entity we are describing is conceptualized as the surface of a sphere. All players (organization members) are equal and reside on it."

"From "Stranger …" I recall a description of the 'language school' that taught, 'point in any direction, you are pointing at yourself'. It was an organizing principle of the communications protocol."

"Such would be the case if one resided on said surface (as everyone must) and pointing was confined to the 'plane' defined as the spherical surface.

Mercurial

"Mercurial? In a sense, yes. Certain of his major patterns are 'sticky' to just a few folks. And the few to whom they stick become the measure of the value generated in fields affected.

A director's director is often less appealing to a broad audience. Not for lack of respect. For expedient delivery of worthy content to its optimal audience sometimes requires subtle technique, lost to a more causual audience, at least in the short term."

Defense? Why?

Its hard to adjust when your game plan is based on a secretive offense and the opposition has obtained said secret. The best that can be hoped for is the defense can buy the offense some time to regroup. Defenses that lack experience in close games are less likely to respond adequately.

Grok Identity (Notes)

"The generic ID function and the application of which it is an enabling part are best as two functional blocks of a larger program with limited communication.

Who: anonimized unique handle to one authentic individual.
What: quality of ID match
When: current time stamp (time of transaction)
Where: geolocation of person
Why: ID role in transaction or conversation

POA
"Just how many old farts have you known that remind you of Jubal (of Stranger fame)?" Her lovely chin cradled in her right palm, expressing a patient demeanor. She looked deep into his eyes.

"My hypnosis instructor was one. My mentor in broadcast, especially radio, before the era of owned media is another. 'Dad' is probably top-of-the-list though. There are more. Why do you ask?"

Silence greeted his question. The inquirer knew there was more and she wisely waited for him to make it explicit. For surely, he would and soon.

"The deep value of humility is difficult to describe, you see. And not at all what it seems in the shouting that masquerades as 'media' these days.", he went on. She knew the right buttons to push. Practice, practice, practice.

Who'da Thunk

Is smiling allowed in the Oval Office?
"So, you might imagine how powerful a statement this might be to the the US Health Care System:

"Compassionate nurse or doctor as member of a patient advocacy coop with the exact same voting power of a patient member. Then scale it up, Prudence. All doctors and nurses supporting patients welcome. There is a similar precedent. Think about it."

"Not as scary to some as: It is time for doctors to share the wealth (the financial kind) with their patients. Imagine the knee jerk responses like, "the politics of envy". Her snicker was not subtle.

Communication Breakdown

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

"I don't know what you are talking about."

How often is this an accurate statement as a part of a heated conversation? In the context of such a dialog between doctor and patient who has the upper hand? Does one or the other party having such a position accomplish better outcomes?

In the case of patient confronting intimately her or his own life or death, one could argue the patient alone is under-represented in the US Health Care System. Workable patient advocacy may be the answer.

"I am forecasting that a cohesive group of influential friends now forming may want to weigh-in on the fairness of the system as it stands today. I could be wrong."

"What if the patient is clueless?

"Its a rhetorical question. And one that often can be a bit disturbing to a consumer with a large interest in health care delivery outcome.

"A far greater hazard is an assumption of decision makers that the patient is better left 'out-of-the-loop' on some level by default.

Necessary, But Insufficient

"It is the enabling node technology. This is true of not only our little venture but of so many others where the answer to the question, "who" takes precedence.

"What irony that this is so common as to dilute a unique awareness in any given mind of its pivotal contribution to a given application.

"Of what do we speak? A ubiquitous mobile device that truly knows who its user is. Not just something she/he remembers and/or caries with her/him. In fact, neither are necessarily required to make a concrete link to the unique person authorized to perform an action.

While the id capability is necessary to the uses we describe, without substantial access control functionality at the node and through the network connected to it, full utility/reliability cannot be realized. One could argue, until the advent of cost-effective technology assisted social networks, the was not sufficient incentive to develop it.
